Chronic Pain
Thousands of people suffer from chronic pain as a result of cancer, failed back syndrome and other conditions. In order to limit side effects, dosages of oral medications are administered that are sometimes not enough to prevent breakthrough pain, leaving patients to suffer until it’s time for their next dose. For such patients, infusion pumps may relieve breakthrough pain and some pain medication side effects. Infusion pumps are implantable devices that continuously deliver small doses of concentrated medication to a targeted site. Employees at the Alfred Mann Foundation have developed such a pump that is currently being used in a multi-center clinical trial to deliver morphine to the membrane around the spinal cord for subjects who suffer from chronic pain.
